Destiny

Updates all around!

Updates on homework:

Science 7 - no assigned homework. 7L has begun Mixtures and Solutions, 7C will start next class. We will be "borrowing" a computer class for Science sometime soon, as we replaced Science with Computers yesterday for both Gr. 7 classes.

Computers 7 - continue working on PowerPoint presentations. Will be due after Christmas (date TBA).

IP 10 - we spent last class playing with Comic Life and making Christmas cards. The new unit on Keyboard Shortcuts will be introduced after the break. Enjoy the down time while it lasts!

Great job to all of the students who performed at the Christmas concert on Tuesday! It went very well, and I was proud of all of you. The audience was very appreciative as well. Thank you for all of your hard work!

Pizza party update!!!!

Senior choir, don't pack a lunch for Monday - we will be having our pizza party in the music room directly following our rehearsal. This party is given by Mr. and Mrs. Moon as a thank-you for our performance at the REAL Interchange mass back in October.

7C - Our pizza party for winning the magazine sale competition will be on Monday as well. I'll be going back and forth between the classroom and the music room, eating lots of pizza at every stop!

Merry week-before-Christmas! Thank you also to all of the wonderful Secret Santas we've been seeing in our classroom this week! :o)

Attack of the Wanted Posters!

Hi IP 10! Here is your Comic Life assignment. You have 2 choices:

Option #1:

Create a 1-page "WANTED" poster. Use a photo of yourself or, with permission, a photo of a friend. As long as the content is school-appropriate, you can be as creative as you wish with the reasons as to why this person is wanted. Suggested information to include: Physical description of criminal, suspected whereabouts, "rap sheet" (list of offenses), reward offered, etc.

Here is an example of a "WANTED" poster. Keep in mind that the template should be very simple, picture-wise. Note the font sizes on this poster, and which words stand out.

Option #2:

Create a 1-page comic book cover page entitled "ATTACK OF THE ________" (fill-in-the-blank). Choose a household or other inanimate object such as a vaccuum cleaner or trombone or bath towel as the subject of your comic book (be creative - you are very imaginative people!). Use pictures where appropriate, preferably one main picture that takes up the entire background of the cover.

Here's an example of a comic book cover to guide your creative thought process:

Notice the details of the cover, such as the month and issue number, price, comic book logo (in the corner), etc. Try to make your cover look as authentic as possible!

Save your projects with your last name and first initial, and either the name "wanted poster" or "attack cover" and submit to the IP 10 drop box. You will have a few classes to work on this project.

Sc 7 notes (p. 69-85)

6.0 Human Activities Can Change Ecosystems

Ecosystems can be changed by both abiotic factors (i.e. floods, fires, erosion, high winds, etc.) and biotic factors (i.e. human activities such as clear-cutting forests, hunting, construction, using herbicides to kill weeds/pesticides to kill insects, etc.).

First Nations and Métis people of Saskatchewan do not view human beings as being at the top of the food chain, but rather the bottom. This is because humans depend on everything else on Earth for their survival.

6.1 The Impact of Technology

Human beings have a bigger impact on ecosystems than any other living things, because:

1. We exist in every biome on the planet (our species is very widespread)
2. We invent and use technology to alter our ecosystems
3. There are nearly 7 billion of us in the world

6.2 The Impact of Human Activities

Because the human population on Earth is so large (and continuously growing), we need to adapt to our growing population by altering our ecosystems.

Human beings need:

1. Space to live. We require more land for growing food and for buildings (schools, houses, businesses, etc.).
2. Energy sources to fuel our technologies.
3. Materials to build our homes, vehicles, etc.

Human beings regularly pollute the environment (air, soil, water). Because humans depend on all other living things for survival, essentially we are poisoning our own food chains when we pollute our planet.

Humans can also harm themselves by polluting ecosystems with chemicals. See pg. 74 for a diagrammatic example (spraying cockroaches, etc.).

7.0 Technologies have been developed to manage wastes that humans generate

Many years ago, all of the wastes that humans generated were biodegradable (could be broken down by scavengers and decomposers). However, now we produce many types of waste that are not able to be broken down to return nutrients to the soil.

7.1 Human Generated Waste: Dealing With Our Garbage

Garbage dumps used to be the most common places in which our waste was disposed. However, these dumps were unattractive and potentially dangerous (rainwater washing bacteria from garbage into the water systems, etc.) and so we developed technologies to improve our garbage disposal practices.

Examples of garbage disposal methods:

1. Recycling depot
2. Composting
3. Household hazardous waste operation
4. Sanitary landfill
5. Incineration

Landfills waste a great amount of energy. Reusing and recycling wastes is much more environmentally efficient than cutting down more trees for paper or drilling/mining new sources of oils and minerals, for example.

7.2 Have We Learned From Our Past?

Humans use a tremendous amount of energy and materials, while also creating a great amount of waste. In the past, we didn’t worry much about the impact that we had on ecosystems. Fortunately, with the “go green” movement of today’s society, we are paying more attention to our actions with regards to the environment.

Testing comments for 7C

Hi 7C! We are going to practice leaving comments on the blog. This will be useful for you if you are at home and you have a question about an assignment, exam, rehearsal, etc.

Leave me a comment with a good, clean joke. This will be fun to read. :o) It can be cheesy if you want.... I mean, I do it all the time to you in class. It might be payback time.

Alice in Wonderland rehearsal info - Tues. Nov. 17th

There will be no formal Alice in Wonderland music rehearsal tonight. Instead, all cast members should take time on their own to review their music and/or dialogue. Aim for getting yourself off-book (i.e. memorizing all of your lines, song lyrics, etc.) as soon as possible. We don't want to be bogged down by scripts and music books once we take our rehearsals to the stage!

Rehearsals have been going well so far. Thank you for all of your hard work! :o)

Choir warmup

Hi Senior Choir! Today's warm-up likely will be running through your head all day (it happened to me when I learned it, too!), so here it is, in case you've forgotten it and it's driving you crazy:

Left, right.... you're wrong, it's.... not right, it's left!
And you'll find it.... left.... right where you left it! ...... ..... That's right!

:o)

Also, please take a look at "Only Time" and start memorizing it. We will perform it for our Christmas concert, which is coming up in less than 5 weeks now! Please put in some practice time for "Jamaican Noel" and "Grown Up Christmas List" as well so that we're not panicking and scrambling to put it all together before the concert.

Sounded great today - please ask me for extra help on your parts if you need it. :o)

Hello from the SK Music Conference!

Hi everyone! Wow, I just spent the greatest weekend in Regina at the SK Music Conference! I got to attend some incredible sessions with some wonderful presenters. The keynote speaker was Peter Boonshaft, who wrote one of the books in my collection, "Teaching Music With Passion." He was just fantastic! I also got to play in the SMC Wind Ensemble, which was a total blast, and gave my chops a great workout! I recorded one of our pieces, "The Redwoods," and will post it on here once I get it uploaded.

I also picked up some really cool ideas for things to try at Rivier. Choir, watch out... I've got some pretty cool warmups for us to try, including some body percussion and other funky things. Level 2 band, I bought you a new piece that I can't wait to read with you this week! (I even bought a piano-patterned nail file for $3 just for fun!)

I've had a great weekend. I have to admit that after all the inspirational speakers I've heard, I have once again been reminded of why I love this job, and I actually really miss you girls and can't wait to get back home and teach you some of the cool things I've learned!

Cheers from Regina!

You girls are awesome! :o) (Don't forget to hand in your October practice charts too.)

Alice in Wonderland rehearsal change

Hello to the cast of Alice in Wonderland!

Due to my attendance at a provincial music conference on Friday morning, our Thursday evening rehearsal will be postponed until further notice. Several of you mentioned that you would not be able to switch the rehearsal time to 3:30pm on Thursday, so this was the best alternate option. On the bright side, I will be learning lots of great things at the conference that I can bring home to us at Rivier! :o)

Rehearsal books/chorus songbooks/scripts will be assigned and handed out to you asap.

October practice charts

Just a reminder that your October practice charts are due by this Friday. Hand them in early to avoid the last-minute panic that happened for some of you last month. Remember that for full marks all you need to do is practice for a minimum of 1 hour per week! The baskets to hand in your charts are located on my filing cabinet in 7C and on the table in the auditorium.

"Taumata" for short

The longest place name in the world!

This will be on your next spelling test. Just kidding!

KShorts Quiz - Comp 7

Just a reminder that the Keyboard Shortcuts quiz for Comp 7L will be on Wednesday, October 7th (tomorrow) and 7C will be on Thursday, October 8th.

Feel free to save your KShorts document to your USB and take it home to study. If you need to print, please put your shortcuts on ONE PAGE only so as to not waste paper. You don't need to print your numbered and bulleted lists, only the instructions about how to create them.

Comp 7 Kshorts - numbered lists and bullets

When you type a number followed by a period, a space, text, and the “return” key, the computer recognizes that you are typing a list and will continue to number each subsequent line:

i.e. I have ten favourite colours:

  1. Lime green
  2. Purple
  3. Hot pink
  4. Magenta
  5. Turquoise
  6. Lavendar
  7. Yellow
  8. Baby blue
  9. Orange
  10. Teal

Asterisk (Shift+8) + tab + typed text + return = bullets

i.e.This is what I am doing today:

· Going to the gym

· Teaching Computers 7C class

· Trying to figure out who to cast in Alice in Wonderland (everyone is SO GOOD)

· Going for coffee with Mrs. Moon to figure out Alice in Wonderland

After adding these shortcuts to your Kshorts document, practice by making a numbered list of the people in our class and a bulleted list of your plans for the weekend. It should be saved in in your Kshorts document.

Science HW (categorized food lists) due next class

Hi 7C and 7L! Your categorized lists of food and their plant and animal components are due next class.

For 7C = Due Thursday, October 1st
For 7L = Due Friday, October 2nd

Remember, you should have 3 columns labelled "Food", "Plant", and "Animal." Take all of the foods listed on your original food tracking list and put them under the "Food" heading. If that food has plant components, list that under "Plant" (i.e. Bread - list "wheat" under the plant heading). If the food has animal components (i.e. meat or dairy), list the animal from which it came in the "Animal" column.

Also, please remember to leave the textbooks in the classroom at the end of each lesson! It is not fair to those who share textbooks to come in for class and not have the books they need for the class.

Thanks!

Sc 7L virtual terrarium homework assignment

Hi Science 7L! Remember that your virtual terrarium assignments are due on Tuesday. Many of you finished your drawings today in class, but for those of you that didn't, here is a reminder of what to include in your representations:

- water
- oxygen (represented by 02 symbols)
- food
- energy
- some sort of shelter (for people, animals, plants, etc.)
- interactions between living and non-living things
- at least one plant and one animal

Once you have finished your drawings, write down a list of how you've represented each of the above points (ex: water = raindrops and lake formed from a stream coming down a mountain; energy = sun producing energy for a flower to grow, berries for humans and animals, etc.).

Leave a comment here if you have any questions about this over the weekend.

Band acknowledgment forms

Hello to all band students! Please be sure to hand in your acknowledgment forms asap - they were due on September 4th and are now a full week overdue. If you haven't submitted yours, please bring it to me on Tuesday!

IP 10 Survey - August 27th, 2009

Hi girls!

Please leave a comment on this post for practice with using the blog.

I would like you to use Microsoft Word to fill out the following survey. When you are finished, please save it as "Lastname, IP 10 survey" and submit it to the IP 10 drop box/hand in folder.

There are a number of assignments and activities that I am planning to do with you over the course of this school year, but there is a bit of room left for new assignments and lessons as well. I have some ideas of things I'd like to try this year, but I would like your input so that you can get the most out of this class as possible. The more specific your answers can be, the more helpful it will be to me when designing your assignments.

1. What areas of information processing and general computer use do you feel are your strengths?
2. In which areas do you feel you have the most room for improvement?
3. List your favourite Mac software programs.
4. What activities, assignments, or projects would you like to see included in your IP 10 course this year?
5. What skills learned in an Information Processing class do you think will most benefit you as a high school student? As a member of the workforce?

Theory final grades

Hi girls. It was great to see so many of you finish the online theory program this weekend. The difference between the marks from Friday to this morning are like night and day. The final grades have been printed now and there will be no changes for those people who complete any more assignments or exams from this point on. As well, the passwords from the last posting on this blog have been removed.

To be fair to the students who finished the online theory program by the specified due date, anyone who had an extension will be penalized 27 marks, which is the equivalent of 5% of the online theory portion of your music grade (approximately 1.5% on your overall report card).

Have a great summer!

This is your last chance to catch up and avoid seeing your grades drop drastically on your report card. Level 1 of the program was to be completed by Thursday. You have had ample warning. I will reprint the marks on Monday and whatever is there when I print them out will be the mark shown on your report card, no questions asked.

(Passwords have been removed)

If you have a problem with accessing any of the exams, you MUST contact me by Monday morning at 10am.

Computers 8 Typing/Word Processing

Today we are going to continue to create tables and practice our word processing skills while also testing our typing speed.

Open a blank Word document and create a table (you can leave your page setup as is rather than changing it to landscape).  Your table will need 8 rows and 4 columns.  Leave the 1st column/1st row cell blank, and fill in the rest as follows:

Rows:

Astronauts
Aesop's Fables
Rules of Baseball
Tigers in the Wild
Wizard of Oz
Zebras
Enchanted Typewriter

Columns:

Accuracy
Gross WPM
Net WPM

Center justify your text and bold/italicize it.  Save your file as last name, typing progress.

Follow the link to the left for www.typingtest.com and begin by taking the 1-minute test entitled Astronauts.  When the time runs out, all of the information you need to fill in the first row of your table will pop up (Accuracy, gross WPM, and net WPM).  Fill in your table as you go, testing yourself on each of the lessons.

Just for fun

Hi girls!  I did some recording over the May long weekend with my friend Graham (a fantastic guitar player and a friend of mine from university), and I thought I'd share one of our tracks, "Summertime" by George Gershwin.  We recorded it yesterday in his living room - he's got great recording equipment at home!  Enjoy! :o)

Comp 8 Letters - Fiddler on the Roof

Hi girls. The assignment today is to complete your cover letters for your dream job (from last class). Remember that they can be entirely fictional, humorous, serious, whatever you choose, but they must be well-written with no spelling or grammar errors.

When you have completed the first letter assignment and have handed it in to the drop box with your name on it, you may start on the next assignment: a letter of thanks to the cast and crew of "Fiddler on the Roof."

This assignment will be completed in Microsoft Word. Check this link for a template that can be used for a letter of thanks.

The addresses required for your letter are written on the whiteboard in the computer lab.

The body of your letter should include (but is not limited to) the following:

1. A statement of thanks

2. An introduction of yourself (your name, grade, school, etc.)

3. Your review of the show (Which characters were your favourite? Why? Which scenes were the most memorable for you? Describe why you enjoyed the parts you did. Were the costumes appealing? Did the actors/actresses speak with clear voices? Were the characters believable? etc.)

4. What you learned by attending this performance (i.e. Did you learn something about the time period or culture portrayed in the musical? Did the performance inspire you to pursue acting, singing, more regular live theatre attendance, etc? Did the storyline cause you to think about an issue that you hadn't previously considered?)

5. A conclusion in which another statement of thanks is included

6. An appropriate closing (i.e. Sincerely) and your name

For formatting, please observe the following:

1. Font = Times New Roman, size 12

2. Standard margins

3. 1.5 line spacing

4. Full justified text (interior address, body, closing)

5. Right justified text (your name, school address, and date) - DO NOT use tabs to move your cursor to the right hand side of the screen, as this looks sloppy and makes formatting difficult.

6. Leave ample space between your closing and your typed name so that you can sign your letter once it has been printed.

Please note that these letters will be printed and shared with the cast, crew, and staff members at St. Mary High School. Have a friend proofread your letters before you hand them in.

Save this assignment with your last name and "Fiddler letter" and submit it to my drop box.

Science 7 review questions - Unit 2, Topics 5-7

These are the review questions from our game show activity.  Just as a reminder, your quizzes will be written as follows:

7P = Wednesday, May 6th (Period 2)

7C = Thursday, May 7th (Period 4)

Happy studying!

*******

What is the word that describes supporting pieces of wood or other materials around the base of a structure that form a triangle with the ground?

Describe why using triangles in design is often better than using squares.

Give two examples of braces in design (braces on teeth don't count).

What is meant by the term “corrugated”?

Why is corrugated cardboard stronger than regular cardboard?

Define the term “column” and give an example of a column being used in design.

There are many problems associated with using columns to build structures.  Name one.

What is the term given to the last stone placed in an arch?

Why didn’t early arches require mortar to be held together?

List 3 examples of rigid joints.

List 3 examples of mobile joints.

Half an eggshell is what shape?

Why are domes strong shapes to use in design?

What is the name given to a dome that is built up of a framework of triangles?

Comp 8 cover letter assignment

Using Pages, write a letter to somebody who has the power to hire you for your dream job (a casting agent, an accounting manager, an educational director, etc.). Choose the letter template that you feel will best suit the company for which you are applying. In the body of your letter, explain the following to your prospective employer:

- What job you are applying for
- Why you want to work for them or for their company
- What type of experience you have in the field
- Why you would be the best for the job (what personality characteristics do you have that make you the most suitable candidate for this job?)

Feel free to be serious, funny, dramatic, thought-provoking, etc. You can write this letter in any tone you choose, as long as you remain consistent throughout. You may also change font sizes, colours, etc. as you see fit. If your template includes a placeholder for a photo, be sure to choose one that fits the job you are applying for (for example, a very theatrical posed picture of yourself or a professional-looking head shot for an acting job, an artistic photograph of a sunset or an old building or something artistically interesting for a job as a photographer, etc.).

When you are finished, save it with your last name and "dreamjobltr" and submit it to my drop box.

Comp 8 Picnik highlights - subtlety, endings, etc.

Career Ed 8

Hi girls! Just a reminder to those students in 8M who attended the art event this morning: Your "learning styles" document is due by next class. Some of you have already handed it in, and some of you will have a bit of homework to catch up on. Remember to include the graph picture of your results as well as the number you scored in each category (you may copy and paste this information from the website and then format it to fit your Word document with the same font, size, spacing, etc.).

Comp 8 Picnik wrap-up assignments

Hi girls. Our Picniking time is coming to an end (sad, I know). Before you complete the final two assignments, you MUST BE CAUGHT UP on the ones that are missing. I will be stepping students soon if the assignments have not been submitted. Many of you have overdue assignments that I still have not seen.

Once everything has been handed in, your final two assignments are as follows:

Assignment #1 - Endings

Choose an appropriate photo from Google Image Search or your own collection that would complement one of the following quotations:

"If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story." - Orson Welles

"Every end is a new beginning." - Proverb

"In my end is my beginning." - T.S. Eliot

"Nature's first green is gold,
her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower,
but only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
so dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay."
- Robert Frost

"If I can put one touch of rosy sunset into the life of any man or woman, I shall feel that I have worked with God." - G.K. Chesterton

“I didn't ask for it to be over. But then again I didn't ask for it to begin. For that's the way it is with life, as some of the most beautiful days come completely by chance. But even the most beautiful days eventually have their sunset.” - Javan

"Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end." - Seneca

When you have completed this assignment, save it with your last name and "endings" and submit it to my drop box.

Assignment #2 - Own Choice

This one is self-explanatory. Have fun! You can use any effects you wish, and it is entirely your choice whether you want to add text or not. Remember to choose only the effects that will be complimentary (and not distracting) to the overall appeal of your photo.

Save the file with your last name and "own choice" and submit to the drop box.

Sc 7P Reading homework

Please read p. 116-121 for next class. Thanks!

Comp 8 Picnik subtlety assignment

Hi girls!

The first thing on the agenda is to finish and submit your friendship edits.

Once you have completed the editing assignment from last class, you may begin on today's assignment. The name of the game today is subtlety. You will add text in a watermark fashion to a photo of your choice, that is, allowing some of the background to show through by fading the intensity of the text. Be sure to select a text colour that is similar to the object on which you are superimposing it (i.e. Dark golden text to place on top of an autumn leaf). For this assignment you may choose from the following word sets, select from a combination of sets, or simply choose your own words (upon my approval):

1. Live / Love / Laugh
2. Peace / Renewal / Life
3. Hope / Love / Joy
4. Stop / Look / Listen
5. Dream / Believe / Achieve / Inspire

The finish product should be soft, subtle, and overall pleasing to the eye. Try to avoid having any distracting features. Sometimes less is more.

Other effective features: Soften, Vignette (in a subtle colour and perhaps a smaller size or strength than the preset), Matte, Sepia, Black and White, possibly Focal Soften (depending on the nature of your photo), etc.

Click to enlarge this example from the Picnik stock photos:

When you have completed your editing project, save this file with your last name and "Subtlety" and submit to my drop box.

Science 7 exam review

The exam for both Science 7C and 7P will be on Wednesday, April 8th.  The exam is on Unit 2: Structures and Designs, Topics 1-4.

Pages in the textbook to re-read: p. 74-109

Study questions to complete: Checkpoint p. 110 #1-5

In addition to the Checkpoint questions, here are some terms and concepts to help you to study before the exam:

Key terms:

- structure
- design
- natural
- manufactured
- function
- technology
- materials
- properties
- stress
- load
- compression
- tension
- compressive strength
- tensile strength
- metal fatigue
- alloys
- beam
- cantilever
- orientation
- neutral axis

Additional study questions:

1.  List 10 examples each of manufactured and natural objects.

2.  Name three structures that serve the same function (list, and name the function).

3.  Describe how early human beings used simple structures to carry out basic functions.  How many can you brainstorm?  List them.

4.  Manufactured and natural objects often share similar designs.  What manufactured object has a design that may have been inspired by the spider web?  List as many other examples of manufactured and natural objects that share similar designs (i.e. kangaroo pouch/bunnyhug, mushroom/umbrella, bird/hang glider, etc.).

5.  Name two manufactured structures and two natural structures that are used for the function of digging.

6.  Describe why a train bridge made of plastic would not be a wise design decision.  Try to use the words materials, properties, stress, load, and compression/compressive strength in your answer.

7.  What must designers take into account when choosing the right materials to use for a structure?

8.  What will happen to a beam that is supported on both ends when it is put under stress?  Where is the tension?  Where is the compression?

9.  What will happen when a load is placed on a cantilever?  Where is the tension?  Where is the compression?

10.  Why are alloys often good material choices for structures?  What do they offer that single metals do not?

11.  How can a beam be strengthened so as to avoid bending or breaking under a load?  Draw a sketch of a strengthened beam.

12.  When a beam is placed on its narrow edge, what happens to the amount of load it can support?  Why?

13.  Explain why the amount of material along the neutral axis of a beam can be reduced without weakening the beam.  Why is reducing the material along the neutral axis beneficial to the structure?

Leave me a comment here if you have any questions or comments.  Happy studying! :o)

Picnik friendship assignment

Hi Comp 8!

Today's assignment, once you have finished your nature quote edit, is to edit a photo of friends (your own or one from Google) with one of the following quotes (or a friendship quote of your own choice, once approved by me):

"Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born."
- Anais Nin

"A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart, and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words."
- Donna Roberts

"Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow.
Don't walk behind me, I may not lead.
Walk beside me and be my friend."

- Albert Camus

"A hug is worth a thousand words. A friend is worth more."
- Unknown

"It takes a long time to grow an old friend."
- by John Leonard

"A true friend is someone who thinks that you are a good egg even though he knows that you are slightly cracked."
- Bernard Meltzer

"Friendship is the golden ribbon that ties the world together."
-
John Evelyn

"A friend may well be reckoned the masterpiece of nature."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

"What is a friend? A single soul in two bodies."
- Aristotle

"My best friend is the one who brings out the best in me."
- Henry Ford

"In a friend you find a second self."
- Isabelle Norton

"Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light."
- Helen Keller

You may add any effects you wish, as long as you feel that they enhance your photo rather than detracting from it (try to avoid too many points of focus, as the editing you have worked so hard on will be less effective if the eye can't decide where to focus). When you are finished, save it as "lastname, friendship" and submit it to the drop box.

Once again, I can't wait to see what you come up with!
