Computers 8 Typing/Word Processing
Today we are going to continue to create tables and practice our word processing skills while also testing our typing speed.
Open a blank Word document and create a table (you can leave your page setup as is rather than changing it to landscape). Your table will need 8 rows and 4 columns. Leave the 1st column/1st row cell blank, and fill in the rest as follows:
Rows:
Astronauts
Aesop's Fables
Rules of Baseball
Tigers in the Wild
Wizard of Oz
Zebras
Enchanted Typewriter
Columns:
Accuracy
Gross WPM
Net WPM
Center justify your text and bold/italicize it. Save your file as last name, typing progress.
Follow the link to the left for www.typingtest.com and begin by taking the 1-minute test entitled Astronauts. When the time runs out, all of the information you need to fill in the first row of your table will pop up (Accuracy, gross WPM, and net WPM). Fill in your table as you go, testing yourself on each of the lessons.

Comp 8 Letters - Fiddler on the Roof
Hi girls. The assignment today is to complete your cover letters for your dream job (from last class). Remember that they can be entirely fictional, humorous, serious, whatever you choose, but they must be well-written with no spelling or grammar errors.
When you have completed the first letter assignment and have handed it in to the drop box with your name on it, you may start on the next assignment: a letter of thanks to the cast and crew of "Fiddler on the Roof."
This assignment will be completed in Microsoft Word. Check this link for a template that can be used for a letter of thanks.
The addresses required for your letter are written on the whiteboard in the computer lab.
The body of your letter should include (but is not limited to) the following:
1. A statement of thanks
2. An introduction of yourself (your name, grade, school, etc.)
3. Your review of the show (Which characters were your favourite? Why? Which scenes were the most memorable for you? Describe why you enjoyed the parts you did. Were the costumes appealing? Did the actors/actresses speak with clear voices? Were the characters believable? etc.)
4. What you learned by attending this performance (i.e. Did you learn something about the time period or culture portrayed in the musical? Did the performance inspire you to pursue acting, singing, more regular live theatre attendance, etc? Did the storyline cause you to think about an issue that you hadn't previously considered?)
5. A conclusion in which another statement of thanks is included
6. An appropriate closing (i.e. Sincerely) and your name
For formatting, please observe the following:
1. Font = Times New Roman, size 12
2. Standard margins
3. 1.5 line spacing
4. Full justified text (interior address, body, closing)
5. Right justified text (your name, school address, and date) - DO NOT use tabs to move your cursor to the right hand side of the screen, as this looks sloppy and makes formatting difficult.
6. Leave ample space between your closing and your typed name so that you can sign your letter once it has been printed.
Please note that these letters will be printed and shared with the cast, crew, and staff members at St. Mary High School. Have a friend proofread your letters before you hand them in.
Save this assignment with your last name and "Fiddler letter" and submit it to my drop box.

Comp 8 cover letter assignment
Using Pages, write a letter to somebody who has the power to hire you for your dream job (a casting agent, an accounting manager, an educational director, etc.). Choose the letter template that you feel will best suit the company for which you are applying. In the body of your letter, explain the following to your prospective employer:
- What job you are applying for
- Why you want to work for them or for their company
- What type of experience you have in the field
- Why you would be the best for the job (what personality characteristics do you have that make you the most suitable candidate for this job?)
Feel free to be serious, funny, dramatic, thought-provoking, etc. You can write this letter in any tone you choose, as long as you remain consistent throughout. You may also change font sizes, colours, etc. as you see fit. If your template includes a placeholder for a photo, be sure to choose one that fits the job you are applying for (for example, a very theatrical posed picture of yourself or a professional-looking head shot for an acting job, an artistic photograph of a sunset or an old building or something artistically interesting for a job as a photographer, etc.).
When you are finished, save it with your last name and "dreamjobltr" and submit it to my drop box.

Comp 8 Picnik wrap-up assignments
Hi girls. Our Picniking time is coming to an end (sad, I know). Before you complete the final two assignments, you MUST BE CAUGHT UP on the ones that are missing. I will be stepping students soon if the assignments have not been submitted. Many of you have overdue assignments that I still have not seen.
Once everything has been handed in, your final two assignments are as follows:
Assignment #1 - Endings
Choose an appropriate photo from Google Image Search or your own collection that would complement one of the following quotations:
"If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story." - Orson Welles
"Every end is a new beginning." - Proverb
"In my end is my beginning." - T.S. Eliot
"Nature's first green is gold,
her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower,
but only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
so dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay."
- Robert Frost
"If I can put one touch of rosy sunset into the life of any man or woman, I shall feel that I have worked with God." - G.K. Chesterton
"Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end." - Seneca
When you have completed this assignment, save it with your last name and "endings" and submit it to my drop box.
Assignment #2 - Own Choice
This one is self-explanatory. Have fun! You can use any effects you wish, and it is entirely your choice whether you want to add text or not. Remember to choose only the effects that will be complimentary (and not distracting) to the overall appeal of your photo.
Save the file with your last name and "own choice" and submit to the drop box.

Comp 8 Picnik subtlety assignment
Hi girls!
The first thing on the agenda is to finish and submit your friendship edits.
Once you have completed the editing assignment from last class, you may begin on today's assignment. The name of the game today is subtlety. You will add text in a watermark fashion to a photo of your choice, that is, allowing some of the background to show through by fading the intensity of the text. Be sure to select a text colour that is similar to the object on which you are superimposing it (i.e. Dark golden text to place on top of an autumn leaf). For this assignment you may choose from the following word sets, select from a combination of sets, or simply choose your own words (upon my approval):
1. Live / Love / Laugh
2. Peace / Renewal / Life
3. Hope / Love / Joy
4. Stop / Look / Listen
5. Dream / Believe / Achieve / Inspire
The finish product should be soft, subtle, and overall pleasing to the eye. Try to avoid having any distracting features. Sometimes less is more.
Other effective features: Soften, Vignette (in a subtle colour and perhaps a smaller size or strength than the preset), Matte, Sepia, Black and White, possibly Focal Soften (depending on the nature of your photo), etc.
Click to enlarge this example from the Picnik stock photos:
When you have completed your editing project, save this file with your last name and "Subtlety" and submit to my drop box.

Picnik friendship assignment
Hi Comp 8!
Today's assignment, once you have finished your nature quote edit, is to edit a photo of friends (your own or one from Google) with one of the following quotes (or a friendship quote of your own choice, once approved by me):
"Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born."
- Anais Nin
"A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart, and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words."
- Donna Roberts
"Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow.
Don't walk behind me, I may not lead.
Walk beside me and be my friend."
- Albert Camus
"A hug is worth a thousand words. A friend is worth more."
- Unknown
"It takes a long time to grow an old friend."
- by John Leonard
"A true friend is someone who thinks that you are a good egg even though he knows that you are slightly cracked."
- Bernard Meltzer
"Friendship is the golden ribbon that ties the world together."
- John Evelyn
"A friend may well be reckoned the masterpiece of nature."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
"What is a friend? A single soul in two bodies."
- Aristotle
"My best friend is the one who brings out the best in me."
- Henry Ford
"In a friend you find a second self."
- Isabelle Norton
"Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light."
- Helen Keller
You may add any effects you wish, as long as you feel that they enhance your photo rather than detracting from it (try to avoid too many points of focus, as the editing you have worked so hard on will be less effective if the eye can't decide where to focus). When you are finished, save it as "lastname, friendship" and submit it to the drop box.
Once again, I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Picnik nature assignment
Hi Computers 8! The order of business today is to finish your "shadows and sunshine" assignment. When you are finished that, move on to the nature assignment described below:
Choose one of the following quotations:
"In summer, the song sings itself."
- William Carlos Williams
"My profession is to always find God in nature."
- Henry David Thoreau
"All seasons are beautiful for the person who carries happiness within."
- Horace Friess
"Sounds of the wind or sounds of the sea
Make me happy just to be."
- June Polis
"Each moment of the year has its own beauty . . . a picture which was never before and shall never be seen again."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
"If one daffodil is worth a thousand pleasures, then one is too few."
- William Wordsworth
"The earth laughs in flowers."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
"The ocean . . . cold and wild the surf, rushing in to overwhelm the beach, the wind, stinging my cheeks, enveloping me in total freedom."
- Scott Holman
Choose a nature photo from Google Image Search that will complement the quotation you have chosen. Please be sure that the resolution of the photo you choose is high enough that you will be able to edit it with accuracy and that it won't be too "crowded" once you add your effects to it.
You can choose the effects you add to the photo. Remember that sometimes less is more. Some suggestions:
- selective colouring (turn the photo to black and white or sepia and paint back on some original colour)
- selective boosting (turn down the saturation of the photo, boost the picture, click "reverse effect" and then paint back on some boosted colour)
- text emphasis (pick out an important word or phrase in your quotation and change its font, colour, and/or size)
- vignette
- soften
- any other effect(s) that you deem appropriate
When you are finished, save your file as "Lastname, nature quote" and hand it in to my drop box.
Happy editing, you creative beings, you! :o)
PS - Here are some examples of photos I've edited with text. With longer quotations, you may want to spread the text out over the entirety of the photo.

New Comp 8 Picnik assignment
Hi Comp 8!
Today's assignment is to choose an appropriate photo from Google Image Search (or from your own collection of photos, if you have one) that would complement the following quote:
"Most of the shadows of this life are caused by standing in one's own sunshine." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
The technique we will be experimenting with is that of changing the TEXT to emphasize certain words. This can be achieved by creating multiple text boxes so that you can change the size, colour, and font of certain words.
For this assignment, I would like you to emphasize the words "shadows" and "sunshine."
Save it as "last name, shadows sunshine" and submit it to the drop box.

Picnik highlights
Hi Computers 8! Here are a few of the highlights from the past couple Picnik assignments. It's always so interesting to see the variety of assignments turned in from each of you. Some edits have been very subtle, and some have been very bold. These were a few that stood out to me as being particularly unique, interesting, and generally well done.
Featured Picnikers: Lindsey, Hailey, Regan, Jordyn, Ania, Mackenzie, Kennedy, and Alicia. Great job girls! :o)

Computers 8 Selective Boosting assignment
Hi girls!
To continue along the same lines of what we have been working on in Picnik, today we will be experimenting with another form of selective colouring that I call "selective boosting." Basically what it entails is lowering the colour saturation of your original photo, boosting it, and REVERSING the painting effect so that whatever you paint back on will be boosted (higher colour saturation) while the rest will be more muted colours. So, to break that down step by step:
1. Upload the photo that is to be edited.
2. Under the "Edit" tab, click "Colors" and pull the saturation toggle towards the left until you have achieved the level of colour you desire (be sure that it is muted enough that your boosting effect will be noticeable and worth your time and effort).
3. Under the "Create" tab, choose the Boost feature. Adjust the level using the toggle tab until you are happy with the colour of the object to be singled out (i.e. a flower, a guitar, a person, etc.). Always make sure to alter it only enough so that it adds to it, not detracts by being too distracting or overpowering. For example, sometimes boosting colour will erase important details, such as creases in flower petals, etc.
4. In the "Effect Painting" box, click "Reverse Effect." This will bring everything back to the lower colour saturation level. Now, when you paint back the original colour (just like we did when we experimented with black and white selective colour painting), it will be a more bold and saturated colour. The overall effect will be that the entire photo is in colour, but one piece will stand out.
Here are some examples:
Original:

Edited version (based on the steps outlined above, plus some text and a vignette):

Notice how the guitar stands out a bit more than everything else around it. Here's another example of a photo that I edited using selective boosting (this is me standing in front of a waterfall in New Zealand):
Original:
Edited version:
The changes are more subtle when using this technique than the black and white, but it can be very effective if done well. In the waterfall picture, I would stand out even more if I had changed the background to an even lower colour saturation. Keep in mind that when I am looking at your completed photo editing assignments, it should be very clear which portion of the photo was selectively boosted (if it's not clear, consider changing the colour saturation more drastically before you begin effect painting).
Here are the photos I'd like you to work on today:

Save the first one with your last name and "Selective boost guitar" and the second one with your last name and "Selective boost sign." Keep in mind that you can choose which portion(s) of the photo you want to boost (i.e. Do you want to boost the person with the guitar, and leave the background muted so that he stands out? Or, do you want to boost the background and leave the guitar player muted so that he is less noticeable in the midst of his vibrant surroundings?). Be creative - I have seen some amazing work from you so far and am curious to see what you come up with!!!!
Some things to keep in mind:
- Use a brush size that will allow you to be accurate (avoid "colouring outside the lines" please!)
- If you are going to add any text, be sure that there are no spelling errors. Also, please be sure to use a font style and colour that will be clearly visible over your photo.
- Save everything you edit with your last name first. I will discard anything that I find in the drop box without a name on it.
Thanks! I can't wait to see what you come up with!
