Welcome Miss Brost!

Today we welcomed a student-teacher from the University of Saskatchewan, Miss Krista Brost.  She is going to be with us at Rivier for the next 3 weeks and will be working alongside me in Band, Choir, Jazz Choir, Drama, and the Computers/IP classes.  She is a 3rd year vocal major at U of S.  Today was her birthday and I'm pretty sure she was serenaded about 4+ times throughout the day.

Welcome, Miss Brost!

Chamber Choir sneak preview

Here's a sneak preview of the Rivier Academy Chamber Choir - formed this morning at 8am!  We are one rehearsal in and it sounds pretty awesome already!  Well done ladies!

Comp 8L/8M Wednesday April 24th

Wednesday Assignment 1: DETERMINATION

We are turning our attention now to editing photos that will serve us well as portfolio additions. Introducing, the "Motivational/Inspirational" series!

Choose one of the following quotes and find a picture that compliments the text (either from your own collection or a high resolution photo from Google Image search). Save it as "Last name, first initial, determination."

***********************
Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.” - Gail Devers
"Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try. - Unknown

You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.” - Albert Einstein
Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” - Winston Churchill
Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough.” - Og Mandino
When the sun is shining I can do anything; no mountain is too high, no trouble too difficult to overcome.” - Wilma Rudolph
“When faced with a mountain, I will not quit! I will keep striving until I climb over, find a pass through, tunnel underneath, or simply stay and turn the mountain into a gold mine, with God's help." - Robert Half
The surest way not to fail is to determine to succeed.” - Richard Brinsley Sheridan

Wednesday Assignment 2: REFLECTION

Choose an appropriate photo and include one of the following quotes. Save your photo as "reflection" and submit to the drop box.

***********************
Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action.” - James Levin
In water one sees one's own face; But in wine one beholds the heart of another.” - French Proverb

"By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest." - Confucius

"I read and walked for miles at night along the beach, writing bad blank verse and searching endlessly for someone wonderful who would step out of the darkness and change my life. It never crossed my mind that that person could be me." - Anna Quindlen

"It is not so much the example of others we imitate as the reflection of ourselves in their eyes and the echo of ourselves in their words." - Eric Hoffer

"Knowing others is wisdom, knowing yourself is enlightenment." - Lao Tzu

"Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself." - George Bernard Shaw

"The world is a looking glass and gives back to each man a reflection of his own face." - William Thackeray

Updates after Easter

Welcome back everyone!  For most of us, today is the beginning of our 2nd full week back after Easter.  For the Grade 11s, they are back to school today after returning from Europe late Friday night.  Welcome home!

I thought this would be a good time to update everyone on what's going on in the world of Miss Campbell's classes (and life in general).

Computers 8M/8L - New edits: Love, Friendship, Art.  Stay tuned to the blog for more photo editing highlights from your classmates (or yourself!) after report cards are done.

IP 10T/10IC - Word and Pages resumes should be handed in now.  If they are not yet complete, please finish them asap and submit them to the appropriate drop box so that I can mark them.  Our new project is to create a photo book (8x8 or 8x11) on Shutterfly.  You do not need to purchase your photo book at the end of the project, but it is an option if you'd like.

Choral 10-20-30 - Our next performance is Saturday, May 4th at the Catholic Education Foundation Gala.  We will be discussing repertoire shortly (nothing too new or difficult to learn).

Jazz Choir 10-20-30 - New songs: One Fine Day, Singin' in the Rain, Fever.

Band 7-12 - Working on music for a pop concert at the end of the year.  Practice charts are now overdue but if you have a March chart that you still want to hand in, I will accept it late.

Drama 10 - Today we did partner scenes that had to include a shiver/twitch/stammer/shuffle.  It is always interesting to see how different your stories end up!

And now for some fun photo updates from my trip to Mexico!

I got engaged!  Thank you so much for all of your congratulations - we are very excited!

I went bungy jumping just for kicks.  Even after doing 2 previous jumps, this was still scary!

We went parasailing and got super awesome views of the Caribbean blue! :)

Checking out "El Castillo" at Chichen Itza (Mayan ruins)

Swimming in a subterranean river at Xplor eco-tourism park

Ziplining at Selvatica Extreme Canopy Tour - so fun!

And now we're back to school after our excellent adventures (or our relaxing week at home where we stayed in pyjamas for 5 days.... depending on the person...), and can you believe we are only just over 2 months away from graduation?!  That's only 9 weeks!  Amazing!  This year is flying by.

Sub plans for Monday, April 8th

Hi everyone!  I had an excellent trip to Mexico and I have stories to share when I get back (and a little present for everyone too!).  Here's what you will be working on today (Monday) in the computer lab.

(Schedule: P1 - Comp 8L / P2 - 8(3) Theory / P3 - Prep / P4 - Comp 8M / P5 - Level 4 Theory / P6 - Comp 8L)

Computers 8L and 8M:

Assignment #1: LOVE (own choice - can include text or not, can represent various forms of love - romantic, parent/child, etc.)
Assignment #2: ART

Here are some quotes to get you started if you'd like to use text.  Make sure that the photo you choose  complements the quote.  Also, please remember to choose high quality photos to edit, around 1,000 pixels or higher if possible.  Bold colours, selective colouring, selective boosting, black and white with one striking splash of colour, etc. may be very effective in your overall photo effect. Save this assignment as "colour" and submit it to my drop box. Happy editing!

*********************
Colour has taken possession of me; no longer do I have to chase after it. I know that it has hold of me forever... Colour and I are one. I am a painter. - Paul Klee

Seek the strongest colour effect possible. The content is of no importance. - Henri Matisse

I found I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn't say any other way, things I had no words for. - Georgia O'Keeffe

Why do two colours, put one next to the other, sing? Can one really explain this? No. Just as one can never learn how to paint. - Pablo Picasso

There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot, but there are others who, thanks to their art and intelligence, transform a yellow spot into the sun. - Pablo Picasso

Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures. - Henry Ward Beecher

The artist must create a spark before he can make a fire and before art is born, the artist must be ready to be consumed by the fire of his own creation. - Auguste Rodin

Level 8(3) Band: Theory, or instrument practice for those finished theory (at the discretion of the supervising teacher)

Level 4 Band:  Theory (Grade 11 students missing for Europe trip) - instrumental practice for those finished theory

Have a great day!
