Hi Computers 8! Today's assignment is called "Nature Quote." Try a new effect today. Experiment with a new possibility in this assignment. You might discover something interesting! (Of course you can always use techniques that you've learned so far in class.) Choose a high quality photo of a nature scene of your choice. Research a nature quote that fits the mood of the piece and add it to your photo, making sure to change your font, font size, etc. to emphasize certain keywords. Make your decisions intentional and artistic.
Save the file as Lastname, first initial Nature Quote and hand it in to the appropriate folder.

IP 10 - Someone I Admire
This is primarily a writing assignment and will be graded as such. For this assignment, you will be highlighting someone whom you admire. This person could be famous, related to you, living or not living, etc. Choose a high quality photo of this person to include in your blog post if you have access to one.
Please include the following in your writing while you brainstorm this blog post:
- An introductory statement or paragraph to pique the attention and interest of the reader
- The name of the person you admire
- A description of who this person is, their "story" (background information), etc.?
- A description of how you know this person, if applicable. If this person is a celebrity or someone you don't know personally, describe how you became aware of them.
- The qualities that this person has that you admire, and/or their qualities you wish you could exemplify
- Any significant accomplishments this person has achieved
- (Include any other topics you'd like to write about that are related to the person you admire)
Please note that this post should NOT just be one large paragraph. Structure your writing as you would in an English class, with thoughts flowing from paragraph to paragraph. The final product should be approximately 3-5 full, well-structured paragraphs. You will be given at least 2 class periods to complete this assignment.
Happy blogging!
Text effects
Hi Computers 8! Welcome back from what I hope was a wonderful February break. To this point you should have the following assignments handed in:
1. Crayons (Feb 6)
2. Selective Colouring (Feb 8)
3. Selective Boost (Feb 10)
4. Selective Choice - using either the selective colouring or selective fade/boost technique (Feb 14)
5. Flower (Feb 16)
Today we are going to learn and practice a new technique: font manipulation.
To start, find an interesting image from Google that would look neat with a quotation overlay on it (think Tumblr inspirational quote photos, etc). Save it, then upload it to Ribbet. For example:
Then, use the techniques I showed you in class today to add a favourite quotation to your base image (adding text, changing the font, colour, and/or size, adding multiple text boxes to allow for key words to be emphasized in different fonts/colours/sizes, adding geometric shapes and fading them out to create a cover for some of the busier parts of your photo, etc.). Make sure that your quote matches the overall feel of your picture. For example, if your selected quotation is fun and vibrant, choose a fun and vibrant photo. If your quotation is reflective and thought-provoking, choose a calm and serene background.
Save the original photo as Lastname, first initial original photo. Save your edit as Lastname, first initial motivational text. HAND BOTH FILES IN TO THE APPROPRIATE FOLDER.
The internet is FULL of "completed assignments" of this nature, so I need to be able to tell that you did the edit yourself. :)

Computers 8 Flower Edit
Good morning Computers 8! For today's photo edit, please choose a picture of a brightly coloured flower from Google image search. Daisies work well for this effect, as there are some great photos out there of high quality close-up images of vibrant daisies. You are welcome to choose a different flower of course, but please choose an artistic photo rather than just a snapshot of a garden. Using either selective colouring or selective boost, paint back on the most vibrant colours (likely the petals, and depending on the composition of the photo, maybe some green as well). You are welcome to play around with some of the other effects as well until you arrive at a finished product that you are happy with. Be creative with your choices, and remember that you can increase the saturation of colour on the original photo before you change it to black and white so that the vibrance of the colours is more intense against the black and white. Try playing with colour saturation and/or the "Boost," "Orton-ish," or "Lomo-ish" effects. You can also alter the percentage/fade of the effect by using the sliding bars if it's too strong (or not strong enough).
****** MAKE SURE YOU SAVE YOUR WORK AS A JPG FILE!!!! You will hand in the photos to my assignments folder when you are finished, so please label it with your name as well (last name first, as always!). Before you hand in your photo, please make sure you check to see that it has the image icon rather than the white piece of paper icon - if it's the white paper icon it is a file that won't be readable on my computer. Double check before you hand in, please!

Comp 8 assignment for Feb 14
Hi Computers 8. Unfortunately today I am home sick on the couch but I hope you're having a good day at school in my absence. Don't forget to tell people you love them today just like every day!
Today's assignment will be a photo of your choice, edited either with selective colouring (turning the entire photo to black-and-white and then painting back on select pieces of the original colour) or selective fade (drag the saturation of the colour down until the whole photo is pale coloured and then boost the saturation, reverse effect, and paint back on colour). With this edit I would like you to include at least one more feature from the edits menu. I will let you decide what looks the best. Happy editing! I hope to see you tomorrow. Good luck to those auditioning for the play after school today.

Computers 8 Selective Fade
Hi Computers 8! Your new photo editing technique today is called "Selective Fade." It is similar to our selective colouring technique from the past 2 classes but instead the photo will remain in full colour with only certain parts standing out with more vibrant colour saturation. To achieve this effect, follow these steps:
1. Select a high resolution photo from Google Image search that includes one obvious focal point (remember our search criteria from last class - select "Large" size from the Tools menu and select a photo that is roughly 1,000 pixels wide. If you can't find a big enough photo, you can click on "Search by image" next to the photo and look for more sizes. The biggest size will be the first image in the list).
2. Save the photo and upload it to www.ribbet.com.
3. Under the "Basic Edits" tab, click Colour and slide the toggle down to fade the colour saturation down. Apply the effect.
4. Under the "Effects" tab, select Boost and adjust the slider until you get the photo to the saturation level you would like. DO NOT APPLY THE EFFECT.
5. Click "Reverse Effect" and paint back on the focal point. Apply the effect when you are happy with it.
6. Save your image as Lastname, First Initial Selective Fade and hand it in to the assignments folder.
Example from today's class:
When you are finished, as always, you are asked to complete more edits with the same technique. I will mark my favourite assignment if you submit more than one. Happy editing!

IP 10 Dream Travel Destination post
Hi IP 10! Your next assigned blog post is your "dream travel destination." For this post, the following elements need to be included (but you are not limited to only these of course!):
- The name and location of your destination
- The cost of flying from Saskatoon to your destination at the time of the year you'd like to travel (you can search this on www.expedia.ca)
- One potential flight itinerary including departure and arrival time, layovers, airline, flight number, and cost per person
- Hotel, hostel, or other accommodation information (name, price per night, amenities, etc.)
- At least 3-4 photos of your destination that appeal to you (touristy photos, landmarks, cultural or atmospheric photos, etc.)
- One YouTube video related to your dream travel destination
- A list of tourist attractions available at your destination (do your research!) - how much does each tour cost? Tour providers? Itineraries? Other information?
- At least one well-written paragraph describing the appeal of this destination to you
- Any other relevant, interesting facts about your destination
Happy blogging!
See below for an example of my own personal dream travel destination - Machu Picchu, Peru! (It's a work in progress - as I said, this assignment will NOT be done in one class period as it requires extensive research and planning. Check back later to see my final product!)
****************
Imagine yourself high on a mountain, above the clouds, in a city in the sky. The lush green, the ancient stone, and the expansive views in all directions take your breath away. This is Machu Picchu.
Machu Picchu is an ancient 15th century Incan settlement in Peru, nestled high in the Andes Mountains - 2,430m above sea level to be exact. It was built by Incan hands in 1450 but later abandoned during the Spanish Conquest, and remained undiscovered by North Americans until 1911. In 2007 it was voted as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Today it is a popular tourist site, but it is not for the faint of heart as a visit to Machu Picchu involves extensive travel and hiking. In the Quechua language, Machu Picchu means "old peak."
Machu Picchu is located 80 kilometres northwest of Cusco and is accessible by train. Because of its proximity to the Urubamba River, Machu Picchu is often surrounded by mist in the morning. I distinctly remember the very first picture I ever saw of Machu Picchu; it literally took my breath away and from that moment on I was determined to visit someday.
If I want to make my dream of visiting Machu Picchu a reality, I'm going to have to figure out the logistics. How much does a flight to Cusco cost?
I searched flights from July 3rd-14th, 2017, as that would allow me to travel for a longer period of time than I would be afforded during the school year. For one traveler in economy class, a single ticket costs $1,574.29. It's not cheap, but on the other hand it's hard to put a price tag on your dreams! Here are the details about my dream travel experience flight itinerary:

Computers 8 Selective Colouring (own choice)
Hi Computers 8!
You should have finished your crayons edit from Monday and handed it into the Computers 8L 2016-2017 folder (instructions on how to hand in are linked in the left sidebar of my blog). Some of you were asking last class if you could choose your own photo to edit with the selective colouring technique. Today, the answer is yes!
Your assignment is to find a high quality colour image from Google (based on the search criteria that I outlined in class today). Make sure you click to expand the image before you save it, otherwise you risk saving a thumbnail image that will be very low resolution/low quality. Upload your photo to www.ribbet.com and follow the same steps that we used to selectively colour the crayons photo on Monday. Take special care to ensure that no extra "outside the lines" colour shows up around the piece(s) to which you've chosen to restore colour. You may need to use a smaller brush size and utilize the zoom feature in the bottom right corner of your edit box. When it is neat and tidy and you are happy with your work, save your completed image with your last name, first initial and a description of the content of the photo (ie. Lohneis, L colour woman).
When you are finished this assignment, please use your time to complete extra edits using the same technique. The more you have in your portfolio, the better!

IP 10 blog post #3 = Things to do on a limited budget
Hi IP 10s! When you finish your photo/video post from last class, you may start on your next assignment. This one is more of a writing assignment, although I would like you to add at least 2 photos to complement your writing where appropriate (you can add 10 if it fits - it is up to you, the author, to make effective choices for your publication!). Your topic?
Things to Do on a Limited Budget (also sometimes called "Things to Do When You're Bored and Broke"). It's time to get creative! How many fun and interesting things can you think of to do without breaking the bank? Many of your ideas may be totally free! For this assignment I would like you to think of at least 25 things for your list to meet the bare minimum. For full marks, some students have thought of up to 100 items. Have fun!

IP 10 photo/video post assignment
Good morning IP 10s! In Period 2 today we will be split up throughout the class time between working on our new blogging assignment and painting with the grade 9s for a special Rivier Day art project. When you are not painting, you will be working on this:
For your assignment today, you will be creating a post that includes at least two photos with captions, and one video embedded from YouTube. To add the photos, click the photo icon beside "Link" (on your toolbar above your create post box). Select the photo you wish to upload. When the upload is complete you can change the size of the photo and opt to add a caption by clicking on the options below the photo.
To embed a video from YouTube, click the "Share" button below the video (above the comments section). Click the "Embed" tab and copy the HTML text that appears in the box. In your create post box on your blog (where you type as you're writing a new post), click on HTML in the top left corner (beside "Compose," which is where you will be writing your post by default). Make sure your cursor is at the bottom of your post, then paste the copied text in the "HTML" tab and go back to "Compose" again. You should see your video there.
A couple notes:
- All photos and video(s) should be centred within your blog post. The justification option is found directly under your photo once you've placed it within the body of your blog post. For the video, you may need to highlight it and select the centred option for text on your toolbar.
- Each photo should have a caption written below it. Please note that there is a specific spot for captions to go - captions appear in slightly smaller text and are more obviously connected physically to your photos than just typing text below it in your post (example posted below). You may choose to introduce your video in the body of your post before you embed it.
- The quality of your writing will always be taken into account during assessment. Please ensure that you are using proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
- Personal commentary helps to make your blog interesting. I noticed that some of you struggled to find inspiration for your introductory post, so I am suggesting that you choose a favourite artist, musician, or actor for this one. Introduce them, state why they appeal to you, and share your images/video(s) with your readers.
Example post:

Artist Spotlight: Sufjan Stevens
As a musician it is almost impossible for me to answer the questions: "Who's your favourite artist?" or "What's your favourite song?" There are just so many incredibly talented musicians out there, and I love to listen to so many different artists depending on the situation, my mood, or what I'm doing when I'm listening (for example, I prefer different music when I'm driving or relaxing vs. when I'm going for a run). Regardless, one of my favourite artists that I'm almost always in the mood to listen to is Sufjan Stevens. Sigh. His sound is so unique and I really dig the vibe I get from his music. Seeing him in concert has been on my bucket list for years but so far I only know him through my computer and iPod, unfortunately!
Sufjan Stevens is from Detroit, Michigan and was born on July 1st, 1975 which makes him just shy of 10 years older than I am. He has a super mellow voice and also plays a ton of instruments. His recordings often sound quite folky, as he plays banjo among many other instruments.
In 2005 he released an album called "Illinoise," and one of the most popular songs from that album (entitled "Chicago") has long been one of my favourite Sufjan songs. Check it out for yourself!

Computers 8 - Thurs, Feb. 2 assignment updates
Timetables are due today. Save them with your last name and first initial, Timetable 2016-2017.
We are starting some photo editing today. Your first assignment will be using the technique of selective colouring.
For this assignment you will be editing this photo:
Remember, we are practicing our selective colour painting techniques, which means that we want to change the entire picture to black and white and then paint back on one or two crayon colours by using the circle brush tool. If you try to paint back on the original colour and it's not working, chances are you accidentally saved it mid-process and now the computer thinks that portions of your original are black and white. You may have to restart this project.
Please save your work as Last name, First initial, Crayons and submit to the Computers 8 hand-in folder.
