Celebrate Music In Our Schools Month! (Oh dear...)

Oh dear.  Let's hope "Music in Our Schools" Month includes teachers who will instruct their students to USE A MOUTHPIECE (and reed and ligature!) when they play the saxophone, and to put their hands in the proper position - left up, right down - when playing.  A neckstrap wouldn't hurt either!  Haha.

And YES, this is a real ad (as far as I know) - I really, really wish there would have been a good editor before it was published!  Thankfully our Rivier students noticed the errors right away.  Whew.  Small victories. :)

Computers 8L & 8M introduction to online photo editing

Hi Computers 8L & 8M!

We are starting online photo editing today!  Here is an example of your first photo editing technique, "selective colouring."

I will be explaining how to achieve this effect in class today, and will post a step-by-step of instructions shortly.

Here is the original photo:

Here is my edited version with the background colour removed, and 2 different filters added (soften, and Lomo-ish with vignette removed):

Here is the example I created with 8L this afternoon - same concept, different photo and effects:

Music Festival and Honour Band updates

Congratulations to the Chamber Choir and the Grade 12 Vocal Quintet who earned scholarships for their performances at the PA Kiwanis Music Festival this week!  Well done ladies!  There are also solo scholarship winners from our student body as well.  You have represented yourselves and our school well, and you are a testament to the great musical work that is going on at Rivier Academy.

The Chamber Choir will be performing at the Kinsmen Telemiracle telethon on Sunday, March 8th at 1:00pm.  It is taking place in Saskatoon at TCU Place.

Congratulations and good luck to the 11 students representing Rivier at the Saskatchewan Junior and Intermediate North Honour Band in Lloydminster this Friday and Saturday.  The final concert is Saturday at 3:00pm at the Vic Juba Theatre in Lloyd.  The students representing our school are as follows:

Junior Honour Band: Jarica Gooding (Gr. 7 - percussion), Caleb Hammond (Gr. 7 - bass), Ramon Koenig (Gr. 7 - tenor sax), Julianne Friesen (Gr. 8 - bari sax), and Sydney Duncan (Gr. 8 - clarinet)

Intermediate Honour Band (all Gr. 9): Jaejoon Kim (clarinet), Lauren Rusk (clarinet), Janaya Fuller (tenor sax), Dalia Bandet (bass), Trinity Fusick (bass), and Holly Slager (percussion)

Great work everyone, and thank you for your participation and eagerness to experience new opportunities! :)

Career Ed 8 in computer lab

Career Ed 8M will be in the computer lab for the next 2 class periods.  We are working on posters representing the "Work Habits of Effective People"as well as our goal setting lists called "101 Things To Do In the Next 1,001 Days."

Here is a sample of what your poster may look like (this particular example was created using Comic Life):
