IP 10 blog post #3 = Things to do on a limited budget

Hi IP 10s!  When you finish your photo/video post from last class, you may start on your next assignment.  This one is more of a writing assignment, although I would like you to add at least 2 photos to complement your writing where appropriate (you can add 10 if it fits - it is up to you, the author, to make effective choices for your publication!).  Your topic?

Things to Do on a Limited Budget (also sometimes called "Things to Do When You're Bored and Broke").  It's time to get creative!  How many fun and interesting things can you think of to do without breaking the bank?  Many of your ideas may be totally free!  For this assignment I would like you to think of at least 25 things for your list to meet the bare minimum.  For full marks, some students have thought of up to 100 items.  Have fun!

IP 10 photo/video post assignment

Good morning IP 10s!  In Period 2 today we will be split up throughout the class time between working on our new blogging assignment and painting with the grade 9s for a special Rivier Day art project.  When you are not painting, you will be working on this:

For your assignment today, you will be creating a post that includes at least two photos with captions, and one video embedded from YouTube.  To add the photos, click the photo icon beside "Link" (on your toolbar above your create post box).  Select the photo you wish to upload.  When the upload is complete you can change the size of the photo and opt to add a caption by clicking on the options below the photo.

To embed a video from YouTube, click the "Share" button below the video (above the comments section).  Click the "Embed" tab and copy the HTML text that appears in the box.  In your create post box on your blog (where you type as you're writing a new post), click on HTML in the top left corner (beside "Compose," which is where you will be writing your post by default).  Make sure your cursor is at the bottom of your post, then paste the copied text in the "HTML" tab and go back to "Compose" again.  You should see your video there.

A couple notes:

- All photos and video(s) should be centred within your blog post.  The justification option is found directly under your photo once you've placed it within the body of your blog post.  For the video, you may need to highlight it and select the centred option for text on your toolbar.
- Each photo should have a caption written below it.  Please note that there is a specific spot for captions to go - captions appear in slightly smaller text and are more obviously connected physically to your photos than just typing text below it in your post (example posted below).  You may choose to introduce your video in the body of your post before you embed it.
- The quality of your writing will always be taken into account during assessment.  Please ensure that you are using proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
- Personal commentary helps to make your blog interesting.  I noticed that some of you struggled to find inspiration for your introductory post, so I am suggesting that you choose a favourite artist, musician, or actor for this one.  Introduce them, state why they appeal to you, and share your images/video(s) with your readers.

Example post:

Artist Spotlight: Sufjan Stevens

As a musician it is almost impossible for me to answer the questions: "Who's your favourite artist?" or "What's your favourite song?"  There are just so many incredibly talented musicians out there, and I love to listen to so many different artists depending on the situation, my mood, or what I'm doing when I'm listening (for example, I prefer different music when I'm driving or relaxing vs. when I'm going for a run).  Regardless, one of my favourite artists that I'm almost always in the mood to listen to is Sufjan Stevens.  Sigh.  His sound is so unique and I really dig the vibe I get from his music.  Seeing him in concert has been on my bucket list for years but so far I only know him through my computer and iPod, unfortunately!

Sufjan Stevens.  One of the most musically multi-talented guys out there!

Sufjan Stevens is from Detroit, Michigan and was born on July 1st, 1975 which makes him just shy of 10 years older than I am.  He has a super mellow voice and also plays a ton of instruments.  His recordings often sound quite folky, as he plays banjo among many other instruments.

I'm not totally sure what's going on here with that hat, but hey, when you're this good nobody will question it.

In 2005 he released an album called "Illinoise," and one of the most popular songs from that album (entitled "Chicago") has long been one of my favourite Sufjan songs.  Check it out for yourself!

Happy listening, everyone!  I hope you enjoy Sufjan Stevens as much as I do!

Computers 8 - Thurs, Feb. 2 assignment updates

Timetables are due today.  Save them with your last name and first initial, Timetable 2016-2017.

We are starting some photo editing today.  Your first assignment will be using the technique of selective colouring.

For this assignment you will be editing this photo:

Remember, we are practicing our selective colour painting techniques, which means that we want to change the entire picture to black and white and then paint back on one or two crayon colours by using the circle brush tool. If you try to paint back on the original colour and it's not working, chances are you accidentally saved it mid-process and now the computer thinks that portions of your original are black and white. You may have to restart this project.

Please save your work as Last name, First initial, Crayons and submit to the Computers 8 hand-in folder.

IP 10 Blog Post #1 and Layout Requirements

Good morning IP 10!  At the end of this class I will be checking your blogs for the following changes that we began on Monday:

1. Background image and/or colour has been modified from the original template
2. Blog title font/size (and/or colour) has been modified from the original template

I will now also be checking for the following additions to your blogs today:

1. Make an introductory post introducing yourself.  Include one short paragraph of TEXT ONLY (photos and videos will come later), content entirely your choice.  You may tell your readers something about yourself, include a favourite quotation, etc.
2. Add at least 3 gadgets to your sidebar.

To add a gadget:

From your Blogger home page, click "Layout."  Find the button labeled "add a gadget" and scroll through the lists of potential options.  You'll find just about everything imaginable in this list - translators, cat jokes, fish feeding gadgets, random facts, etc.  Pick at least 3 school-appropriate gadgets that appeal to you and add them to your blog.  These will show up on your sidebar in the same place regardless of what your posts are doing beside them.  Consider them permanent fixtures on your blog (although of course you can always remove or change them later if you'd like).

If you have additional time after you've completed these tasks, you can continue to modify the design of your blog to better suit your tastes.  Have fun!

IP 10 sneak peek

Hi IP 10!  The next unit we will be working on will be one of the following two options (we will decide as a class which one we would like to start with tomorrow!):

1. Alphabet Photography and photo collage editing
2. Blogging

I'm baaaaaaaack!

It has been over a year since I've posted here on Mrs. Lohneis' Notes.  It's hard to believe that I'm coming back to work after 13 months of maternity leave, but here we are, getting back into the swing of things!  I now officially have a 1-year-old (whaaat?!), and he is the absolute BEST.  Don't believe me?  Check out this picture of him at the Temple Gardens Mineral Spa in Moose Jaw when he was 5 months old.  Such a cool baby.

As you can see, we had lots of fun on my maternity leave!  Here we are at my friends Kaleigh and Callum's Christmas party in Brandon in December (almost 11 months old).

Come to think of it, my whole mat leave was all sorts of fun!  We were super lucky to have a very easy baby; he only gets fussy if he's tired, cold, or hungry.  Otherwise he's a total superstar in pretty much everything he does (but I'm not a biased mama or anything!).  We did tons of cool stuff during my year at home!  Highlights:

- Traveled to: Winnipeg (April and again in December), Vancouver (June), Moose Jaw (June), Slocan Valley BC (September), and Utah (October)
- Visited the Temple Gardens Mineral Spa, Tunnels of Moose Jaw, and Skydive South Sask in June to fulfill my Christmas present to my dad of a tandem skydive!  We watched from the ground and my dad LOVED it (I did my skydive in 2010 over Lake Taupo, New Zealand, and I knew my dad would love to do it himself!)
- Cooked and baked my way through about 230 new recipes in my GIANT mat leave cookbook project challenge of 2016.  Whew!
- Learned and fell in love with the art of babywearing - my absolute favourite thing!
- Took the "baby boats" aquacise class at Marion Aquatics (so cute!)
- Checked out "turf time" at the Alfred Jenkins Field House
- Went for many runs in the Chariot jogging stroller
- Learned that we love the swings at Kinsmen Park
- Played in the paddling pools at Kinsmen Park and at Wildwood Park in Saskatoon
- Rented a car and visited the Halcyon Hot Springs in the Slocan Valley in BC while attending my friend's wedding in September
- Made a road trip to visit friends at IMC in June (North Dakota)
- Road trip to visit friends at RYLA in August (Manitoba)
- Road trip to my cousin's wedding in Minnedosa, MB in August
- Got my braces off in July after almost exactly 18 months
- Co-slept with baby for the first few months until sleep training at 5.5 months.... such nice cuddles, but also so nice to gain some freedom again once the little nugget learned to sleep well in his crib!
- Cut 9 teeth including a giant molar (fun, fun!)
- Learned to roll over, then army crawl, then bum scoot..... next stop, walking!
- Started to talk a lot ("Mama," "Dada," "Baba," "this," "that," and tons of random babbling), and he now understands lots of new words and phrases ("Give mommy a kiss," "push the button," "do it again," "make the fishies go bye-bye" when we're turning off his fish aquarium lullabies, "go upside down," "how old are you?" as he holds up one finger, etc.)
- Donated almost 110 lbs (!!!!) of breast milk to the Northernstar Mothers Milk Bank
- Had professional photo shoots in May for Mothers Day, in October with his cousins, in November for Christmas, and in January for his one year "cake smash" - he is a well-photographed child for sure!
- Bought myself a hot tub in January!

It has been a fantastic year and I sure have enjoyed my time at home with my mini-me.  He's such a happy little guy, super funny and fun, and is just generally an absolute little sweet heart.  I don't think I could have understood a love like this before having him, but now that I'm a mother I can't imagine my life without him!

Handsome little man!
No more braces!
Babywearing on a beautiful fall day
Laughing at daddy being silly
Swinging at the park with mommy in December
Going for a walk to a "Movies for Mommies" movie in Saskatoon
1 year cake smash!  "Where the Wild Things Are" theme. :)
Mommy's homemade fruit bars are tasty.... especially the mini chocolate chips part.
My little nugget!

And then, POOF!  I blinked, and a year has passed.  And now I'm back to work.  I have missed all of you and am looking forward to working with you again!  Let the fun begin!
